Municipal Committee Hiranagar Organizes Lok Kalyan Mela Under Swachhatam Mela to Drive Welfare Schemes and Plastic-Free Market Initiatives

HIRANAGAR: To drive comprehensive civic awareness and strengthen grassroots implementation of urban welfare frameworks, the Municipal Committee Hiranagar organized a Lok Kalyan Mela under the Swachhatam Mela banner today. The multi-sectoral program was designed to educate local residents about central welfare schemes alongside core municipal cleanliness and environmental initiatives.

During the event, departmental representatives shared detailed information regarding critical public welfare and urban livelihood schemes, including the Girl Child Welfare initiatives, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), and PM SVANidhi. Concurrently, the municipal team led extensive technical sessions focusing on environmental mandates specified in the Solid Waste Management Rules, highlighting the mechanics of mandatory source segregation, the operationalization of the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle (RRR) concept, the ongoing Plastic-Free Market Campaign, and the utilization of the Swachhata App for rapid grievance redressal. Citizens were strongly encouraged to actively register for these programs and directly leverage the benefits of the available government schemes.

A major portion of the dynamic mela was dedicated to the enforcement and advocacy of a Plastic-Free Market ecosystem. Participants and visitors were systematically educated on the long-term ecological and public health hazards associated with single-use plastic (SUP) items. Field teams actively encouraged the immediate adoption of sustainable, eco-friendly alternatives such as cloth and jute bags. Explicit public announcements clarified that plastic waste must never be mixed with general garbage, littered in public places, or openly burnt. Instead, residents were instructed to collect plastic fractions separately and deposit them at designated municipal collection centers and Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) to ensure scientific disposal and recycling. Local shopkeepers, commercial vendors, and street markets were urged to completely halt the distribution of single-use plastics to support sustainable municipal waste management.

The program was executed under the direct supervision of the Executive Officer (EO), Municipal Committee Hiranagar, and saw a large turnout comprising sectoral officials from various line departments, local citizens, Swachhata Executives, and frontline Community Mobilizers. The Lok Kalyan Mela concluded with a collective pledge taken by all stakeholders to consistently promote urban cleanliness, practice strict source segregation, ensure responsible plastic waste management, and uphold the long-term environmental sustainability of Hiranagar town.
