A review meeting of the Green Colony Initiative was held at Gulberg Cooperative Colony, Peerbagh, Srinagar, bringing together senior government officials, residents, and community representatives to assess progress and strengthen efforts towards creating a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable neighbourhood.
The meeting was chaired by the Commissioner/Secretary, Housing & Urban Development Department, and attended by the Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), senior officials, representatives of Swaaha Resource Management Pvt. Ltd., members of the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) and local residents. The gathering was hosted in the garden of the residence of Ms. Naseema (Retd. IAS), providing an opportunity for meaningful interaction between the administration and the community.
The Green Colony Initiative is a community-focused programme aimed at improving urban living through effective waste management, environmental conservation, increased green cover, and active citizen participation. Addressing the gathering, the Commissioner/Secretary stressed that the success of the initiative depends on the collective efforts of residents and their commitment to adopting environmentally responsible practices in their daily lives.
A major focus of the meeting was the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, particularly the Four-Bin Source Segregation System. Residents were encouraged to segregate waste at the household level into separate categories to ensure efficient collection, recycling, composting, and scientific disposal. Officials highlighted that proper segregation at source is the foundation of an effective waste management system and plays a crucial role in keeping neighbourhoods clean and healthy.
The meeting also reviewed the ongoing plantation drive being carried out under the Green Colony Initiative. Residents were encouraged to adopt and care for at least two trees outside their homes. Participants were informed that increasing green cover not only enhances the beauty of the colony but also contributes to better air quality, biodiversity conservation, and a healthier environment. Emphasis was laid on nurturing and protecting the saplings to ensure their long-term survival.
Another important issue discussed was the creation of designated dog feeding points within the colony. Officials explained that identifying specific feeding locations is part of a scientific and humane approach to stray dog management. Such measures help maintain public hygiene, support sterilization and vaccination efforts, and reduce human-animal conflict while ensuring the welfare of stray animals.
A capacity-building session was conducted by Mr. Tabraiz Hussain Madani, Capacity Building Expert, Swaaha Resource Management Pvt. Ltd. During the session, he explained the importance of the Four-Bin Source Segregation System and highlighted the role of every household in making the initiative successful. He also spoke about the benefits of plantation drives and encouraged residents to actively participate in maintaining green spaces through the adoption of trees. In addition, he discussed the significance of designated dog feeding points and emphasized that community participation and responsible behaviour are key to achieving the objectives of the Green Colony Initiative.
The meeting concluded with an interactive discussion during which residents shared suggestions and feedback on waste management, plantation activities, and community engagement. Appreciating the enthusiasm and cooperation shown by the residents, the Commissioner/Secretary called upon everyone to continue working together to transform Gulberg Cooperative Colony into a model green neighbourhood and a source of inspiration for other residential areas across Srinagar and the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir.
