Kashmir’s Green Momentum: New Institutions Across Kupwara, Bandipora and Baramulla Achieve Green Campus Status

A quiet, yet profound, environmental revolution is gaining momentum across the Kashmir Division. Under the flagship Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban (SBM-U) Green Campus Initiative, a new wave of institutions spanning schools, police establishments and government offices have proudly earned the ‘Green Campus’ status, demonstrating a deep-seated commitment to sustainability. This is more than a certification; it is a shared pledge to preserve the pristine beauty of the Valley.

The success story unfolds across three distinct districts: Kupwara, Bandipora and Baramulla. Dedicated Information, Education and Communication (IEC) teams from the respective Municipal Councils meticulously guided and assessed these institutions against six rigorous environmental benchmarks:

Bandipora: The Guardians of Green

In Bandipora, the mission found champions among the uniformed officials. The IEC Team and Municipal Council focused their efforts on key public safety centers, proving that environmental responsibility is vital in all sectors:

  • SP Office Bandipora
  • District Police Lines (DPL) Bandipora
  • DySP Headquarters Bandipora

The visits were a productive exchange, moving beyond simple checks to motivate personnel to integrate eco-friendly practices into their daily operations. The focus on Solid Waste Management and adopting Plastic-Free Practices within these high-traffic public institutions sets a powerful example, turning administrative hubs into models of clean governance.

Baramulla: Nurturing the Next Generation

In Baramulla, the green movement took root in the hearts of the youngest citizens. The Municipal Council Baramulla’s IEC team celebrated the proactive spirit of two schools, recognizing their holistic approach to environmental education:

  • Dagger Parivar School Baramulla
  • Beacon House Modern School Baramulla

These schools weren’t just following rules; they were driving change through active Eco-club activities and fostering an environmental curriculum. The designation acknowledged their successful implementation of everything from energy-efficient LED lighting to student-led plantation drives, ensuring the next generation understands that a cleaner Kashmir begins in their classrooms and courtyards.

Kupwara: Leading by Example

In Kupwara, the Municipal Council’s team, alongside Swaaha executives, brought the initiative to the core of civic administration, emphasizing that every public space must champion the cause:

  • TRC Kupwara
  • Town Hall Kupwara

The declaration of these government offices as Green Campuses highlights a top-down commitment. Officials are now empowered with enhanced awareness on waste management, cleanliness and green initiatives, setting a precedent for every employee and visitor. Their successful adoption of waste segregation and promotion of plastic-free, eco-friendly practices underscores a renewed sense of public duty towards a clean environment.

A Shared Vision for Kashmir

The common thread uniting these successful declarations across Kupwara, Bandipora, and Baramulla is a commitment to the six parameters of sustainability: from color-coded bins and composting to the use of renewable energy and maintaining vibrant greenery.

The Municipal Councils have assured these newly certified institutions of continued technical guidance and IEC support under the SBM-U framework. This expansion of the Green Campus status serves as a powerful reminder that when educational institutions, public safety centers, and government offices work together, the collective vision of a cleaner, more sustainable Jammu and Kashmir moves closer to reality. The green tide is rising and the Valley is all the more beautiful for it.
