Swachhtantra 2.0: Resurrecting the Spirit of Cleanliness Across the Kashmir Division

Just as the winds of change swept through our streets last year, the dawn of 2026 has brought with it the return of a beloved movement. The spirit of “Swachhtantra,” which taught us that our freedom is best celebrated through the purity of our surroundings, has been reignited as Swachhtantra 2.0 – Pride in Democracy, Pride in Cleanliness. This year, the mission is more than just a campaign; it is a meticulously planned journey guided by a monthly roster that ensures no corner of our beautiful valley is left behind. From the bustling markets to the quietest backlanes, the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) of the Kashmir Division have hit the ground running, turning the “Road to Swachh Survekshan 2025-26” into a living reality.

The transformation began with a heavy focus on reclaiming spaces that had long been lost to neglect. In the Municipal Committee of Hajin, the week started with a high-stakes operation at Ward No. 13, Bhanger Mohalla. Moving beyond routine sweeping, the team targeted identified Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) that had become a nuisance for the local community. With intensive manpower and a commitment to public health, these spots were not just cleaned but completely eliminated, following the strict municipal norms that prioritize a sustainable, toxin-free environment for every resident.

Further south, the Municipal Council of Pulwama demonstrated the power of persistence by successfully eradicating a notorious GVP at the Old Bus Stand. This site, which had been a blemish on the town’s landscape for a month, was cleared as part of the strategic “clearance and elimination” phase of the roster. Simultaneously, in Bandipora, the focus shifted to the “unseen” parts of the city. The Municipal Council launched a deep-cleaning drive in the backlanes of Kaloosa, where layers of debris and accumulated waste were cleared to breathe new life into the neighborhood, ensuring that the residents of these narrow lanes enjoy the same hygiene standards as those on the main roads.

The patriotic fervor of the upcoming Republic Day added a unique energy to the drives in Shopian. Under the banner of “Swachhtantra 2.0,” the Municipal Council at Bongam turned cleanliness into a “Jan Andolan” or people’s movement. Sanitary staff and IEC teams worked in perfect synergy, treating waste collection not just as a job, but as a civic duty to the nation. Every kilogram of waste collected was scientifically transported to dumping sites, ensuring that the beauty of Bongam remains preserved for the generations to come.

In Pattan, the mission reached a symbolic milestone at the local Marriage Hall. Once a site plagued by illegal dumping, it has now been transformed into a clean, safe public landmark through the successful elimination of a major GVP. By installing signage and enforcing strict sanitation measures, the ULB is ensuring that this transformation is permanent. As we move through this monthly roster from cleaning the sacred waters of the Jhelum and Tawi to the mega cleanliness drives scheduled for the Republic Day build-up it is clear that Swachhtantra2.0 is not just about picking up litter; it is about restoring the dignity of our democracy through the cleanliness of our land.
