Srinagar Launches ‘Green Campus Initiative’ Under Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 ( SBM-U 2.0 ) to Foster Sustainable Educational Institutions

Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir – December 13, 2025 – In a significant step towards environmental sustainability and urban cleanliness, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) today hosted a critical capacity-building and awareness session at SP Higher Secondary School, Srinagar, officially rolling out the Green Campus Initiative. This important program is being implemented under the flagship Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0) to transform educational institutions into models of environmental responsibility.

A high-level capacity-building and awareness session was successfully held today at SP Higher Secondary School, Srinagar, marking the official commencement of the program. The session was presided over by the Chief Education Officer (CEO), Srinagar, Mr. Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Bhat and saw the participation of Heads of Institutions from all educational zones of Srinagar.

The primary objective of the initiative is to bring all educational institutions under the Green Campus framework, focusing on achieving a ‘Garbage-Free’ status. The Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Team of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) conducted the detailed briefing, which was designed to build capacity and create deep awareness among the institutional heads.

Participants received comprehensive details on the concept of a Green Campus and were thoroughly briefed on the key parameters required for an institution to achieve the Green Campus declaration. These parameters encompass a rigorous six-point criteria, including scientific Solid Waste Management, Water Conservation, Energy Efficiency, Extensive Greenery and Plantation, Cleanliness & Hygiene and Plastic-Free practices.

In his remarks, CEO Srinagar, Mr. Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Bhat, stressed the pivotal role educational leaders play in fostering a culture of sustainability. The SMC is committed to working closely with the education sector to ensure the initiative succeeds in creating ‘Garbage-Free’ campuses and inspiring broader environmental consciousness throughout the city.

The successful launch of this capacity-building session marks a proactive move by the SMC to instill eco-conscious behavior from a young age, positioning educational institutions as catalysts for broader behavioral change across the city. The SMC is committed to providing continued technical support and guidance to ensure the Green Campus Initiative evolves into a lasting legacy of a cleaner, greener Srinagar.
