Green Campus Initiative Under SBM-U 2.0 Expands Across Jammu and Rajouri

JAMMU, December 18, 2025 — Over the past two days, the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U 2.0) has reached a significant milestone in its drive to create sustainable and eco-friendly institutions. Through the ongoing Green Campus Initiative, several prominent institutions have been evaluated and recognized for their commitment to environmental standards, hygiene, and waste management. The initiative, supported by the Swaaha IEC team and local municipal authorities, aims to turn schools and public offices into models of sustainability that inspire the community.

On December 16, Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Jammu Cantt. was officially declared a Green Campus. The declaration took place following a thorough assessment of the school’s environmental practices. Under the guidance of Sanitation Officer Sh. Arun Nayar and Sanitary Inspector Sh. Bansi Lal, the school successfully implemented a system for proper waste segregation and a total ban on single-use plastics. The campus now features clean, green surroundings and active plantation drives, with students taking a lead role in maintaining a plastic-free environment. Similarly, K.C. Public School in Jammu was recognized for its efforts in solid waste management and energy efficiency. The school has integrated environmental education into its daily routine, ensuring that students understand the importance of composting, recycling, and conserving natural resources.

The momentum continued in Rajouri, where the Himalayan Education Mission Higher Secondary School was also declared a Green Campus. During a visit by the IEC team and Swachhta Executives of the Municipal Council Rajouri, the institution demonstrated an impressive dedication to eco-friendly living. A highlight of the visit was the school’s well-maintained kitchen garden, which not only improves the aesthetics of the campus but also provides a practical learning space for students to understand sustainable food systems. The school’s efforts in waste segregation and maintaining high standards of hygiene were praised by the visiting officials as a benchmark for other institutions in the district.

Expanding beyond educational centers, the initiative moved to the administrative sector on December 17 with a comprehensive evaluation at the Office of the Principal Accountant General (A&E) in Jammu. Chaired by Sh. J.P.N. Singh and attended by experts from the Jammu Municipal Corporation, including Health Officer Dr. Vinod Sharma, the session focused on creating a roadmap for the office to achieve official Green Campus status. The team assessed the office’s current waste management, energy usage, and plastic-free policies. This drive marks a transition toward making government workspaces more sustainable and waste-free. By involving both schools and government offices, the SBM-U 2.0 mission is successfully embedding the values of cleanliness and conservation into the daily fabric of urban life across the region.
