Growing the Green Footprint: How SBM-U 2.0 is Transforming Our Institutions

The Swachh Bharat Mission- (Urban) 2.0 isn’t just a policy on paper it’s becoming a visible reality in our schools and offices. The “Green Campus” initiative is a major part of this journey, and this week, the movement gained even more momentum as new institutions joined the ranks of those leading by example.

New Leaders in Sustainability

The latest chapter of this success story unfolded at Government Girls Higher Secondary School (Jammu Cantt). After months of hard work, the school was officially declared a Green Campus. It wasn’t just about cleaning up for a day; it was about changing how the school breathes. From strict waste segregation to a total ban on single-use plastics, the staff and students have turned their campus into a model of hygiene and environmental care.

In Rajouri, the Himalayan Education Mission showed that sustainability can be beautiful. Their campus now features a thriving kitchen garden that serves as a practical classroom for students. By managing their own waste and maintaining lush greenery, they proved that even in busy urban settings, we can stay connected to nature. Similarly, K.C. Public School (Jammu) successfully met the tough benchmarks for waste management and energy efficiency, earning its spot as a certified Green Campus.

Beyond the Classroom

The mission is now moving into our administrative hubs as well. Recently, a high-level evaluation drive was conducted at the Office of the Principal Accountant General (A&E) in Jammu. Led by Sh. J.P.N. Singh and experts from the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), this session wasn’t just a meeting it was a roadmap. They looked at everything from LED lighting to how the office handles its daily waste. While the schools are leading the way for the youth, this office is proving that our workspaces are ready to embrace the same green standards.

The People Behind the Mission

This progress is driven by the tireless work of the Swaaha IEC team and officials like Sanitation Officer Sh. Arun Nayar and Sanitary Inspector Sh. Bansi Lal. They aren’t just inspectors; they are mentors helping these institutions understand that “green” is a lifestyle.

Whether it’s a student in Rajouri learning to compost or an officer in Jammu switching to plastic-free alternatives, the story of SBM-U 2.0 is being written by everyone. As more campuses are added to this list, the goal becomes clearer: a cleaner, healthier and more responsible urban India.
