Field Awareness Campaign on the Single Use Plastic Ban along the Transit Corridors

Protecting the fragile local ecology from non-biodegradable pollution is a major environmental focus for the Jammu and Kashmir Housing and Urban Development Department. To keep plastic waste from entering the pristine mountain passes and high-altitude water channels, the administration enforced a strict ban on single-use plastics across all transit routes. This initiative was led by dedicated field teams and urban local bodies stationed at key entry gateways and major base camps, including the critical checkpoints of Lakhanpur, Qazigund, and the transit camp of Nunwan under the Pahalgam municipal limits. 

During these intensive awareness sessions, municipal field personnel worked closely with incoming travelers, local market associations, and community kitchens. Volunteers explained the long-term damage that microplastics cause to local soil health and alpine streams. To give the public a practical alternative to plastic packaging, the municipal corporations and regional urban local bodies distributed more than 31,802 eco-friendly jute and cloth bags directly to the yatris, ensuring sustainable habits were adopted right at the start of the journey. 

The immediate impact of this campaign was a visible reduction in plastic litter across the camp premises. By sensitizing a total of  87,540 individuals across various regional urban local bodies including active transit hubs like Banihal and Ramban the administration successfully created an eco-friendly environment. Local vendors and food stalls completely phased out single-use items in favor of biodegradable options like leaf plates, wooden cutlery, and paper cups, ensuring that the heavy flow of travelers leaves a minimal footprint on the region’s delicate natural heritage.
