Initiated by: Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) under Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0
The Jammu Municipal Corporation has officially initiated a month-long intensive SwachhtaInternship Programme across 20 selected schools in Jammu. The campaign launched today at Govt. Girls High School, City Chowk, serving as a launchpad for a city-wide movement to transform students into environmental ambassadors. As the youth are the future of the nation, this programme is designed to instill lifelong habits that will drive a sustainable national change.
The 4-Week Capacity Building Roadmap
The internship consists of 8 specialized classes (2 per week) designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical field experience:
• Week 1: Waste Management Fundamentals Interactive workshops focusing on the science of waste segregation—separating wet, dry, and hazardous waste at the source.
• Week 2: Creative Awareness & Outreach Training students in Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) strategies through Nukkad Nataks (street plays), poster making, and awareness rallies.
• Week 3: Waste-to-Wealth & Health Practical demonstrations on organic composting and dedicated sessions on Menstrual Hygiene Management to promote health and sanitation among adolescent girls.
• Week 4: Plastic Solutions & Industrial Exposure Advanced sessions on combating plastic pollution followed by field visits to Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) to observe waste recycling and processing in real-time.
Leadership Perspective
Dr. Devansh Yadav (IAS), Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation and Mission Director, Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0, shared a powerful vision during the session:
“Cleanliness is next to godliness,” he remarked, quoting Mahatma Gandhi. He emphasized that children are the future of the nation. Once they are taught these essential values and keep them in mind, they will naturally bring about a significant change in the nation’s landscape.
Execution & Impact
The programme is being executed by the IEC Team, Swaaha, in close coordination with the school administration and the School Education Department. By the end of this campaign, students will not only have learned about cleanliness but will have the practical tools to lead “Jan Andolans” (People’s Movements) within their own communities.
