SRINAGAR, J&K — The Directorate of Urban Local Bodies Kashmir (DULBK) is proud to announce the successful culmination of its division-wide Spring Plantation Drive, an intensive environmental initiative aimed at enhancing the green cover and ecological health of the Kashmir Valley. Executed under the umbrella of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) Urban 2.0, this campaign saw the transformation of urban spaces across more than 40 Municipal Councils and Committees into symbols of environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
In a coordinated display of administrative efficiency and community spirit, the drive reached every corner of the Kashmir division with specific, measurable targets. Each Municipal Council successfully planted at least 100 saplings, while every Municipal Committee contributed by planting 50 saplings within their respective jurisdictions. These efforts focused on vital urban lungs, including public parks, roadsides, school premises, and government institutions, ensuring that the benefits of expanded greenery are felt directly by the residents in their daily lives.
A key highlight of this mission was its scientific and collaborative approach. Carried out in close partnership with the Forest Department to ensure the selection of indigenous and climate-appropriate species, the drive went far beyond simple planting. Every sapling has been meticulously geo-referenced and tagged, a digital intervention that allows the Directorate to monitor survival rates and ensure the long-term growth of the new green canopy. This level of accountability ensures that the resources invested today will yield a verifiable environmental legacy for years to come.
The drive effectively transitioned from a government mandate to a true “Jan Andolan” or people’s movement. It witnessed the vibrant and active participation of ULB officials, students, civil society members, and local residents, all working together to promote public awareness regarding conservation. This collective action serves the broader vision of SBM-Urban 2.0: to build cities that are not only clean but also resilient to the challenges of modern climate change. By integrating urban beautification with ecological restoration, DULB Kashmir continues to set a benchmark for sustainable urban development across the region.
