From Soldier to Soil Warrior: The Green Mission of Ex-Serviceman Raj Kumar

In the rugged terrains of District Reasi, Jammu, a new kind of battle is being fought not with weapons, but with saplings, eco-bricks, and a vision for a sustainable future. At the heart of this movement is Raj Kumar, an ex-serviceman whose life is a testament to the fact that a soldier never truly retires; they simply find new ways to serve. After years of guarding the nation’s borders, Raj Kumar has now dedicated his life to guarding the environment, proving that discipline and patriotism are the foundation of a cleaner India.

The seeds of this transformation were sown during his posting in the Northeast, particularly in Arunachal Pradesh. There, he witnessed a profound harmony between humans and nature. He observed how the local communities were deeply conscious of their surroundings, living in perfect coordination with the environment and strictly refusing to litter. This experience was a turning point. He realized that while he was serving the country through defense, there was a silent, urgent need to serve the mother earth that sustains us all.

Upon returning to his hometown in Reasi, Raj Kumar brought that military discipline to his environmental mission. He began at the most fundamental level his own home. He established a private nursery and embarked on a massive plantation drive, successfully planting over 30,000 trees across his locality. His philosophy is grounded in accountability; he often speaks about the devastating forest fires in the region, noting that these are not merely accidents but a reflection of human negligence our “Karma” catching up with us. To counter this, he believes we must change our actions at the root.

Raj Kumar’s contribution to the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) goes beyond plantation. He is a pioneer of “Waste to Art,” transforming discarded plastic and trash into creative installations and functional items. He has become a mentor for the younger generation, visiting nearby schools to teach children the art of making eco-bricks. By stuffing non-biodegradable plastic into bottles to create sturdy building blocks, he is teaching students how to manage waste while living a sustainable life. His message is clear: plastic is only “waste” if we lack the imagination to reuse it.

His relentless efforts for over three years did not go unnoticed. His dedication earned him a special mention by the Honorable Lieutenant Governor, Shri Manoj Sinha, in the popular radio program Awaam Ki Awaaz. This recognition served as a morale booster for the entire district, highlighting Raj Kumar as a role model for civic responsibility.

Whether he is participating in local Swachhata Abhiyans, feeding birds during the scorching summer months, or educating the youth, Raj Kumar’s life is now a mission for the future of Mother Earth. He often says that the discipline he learned in the forces is what drives him to stay consistent. For this braveheart from Reasi, the battlefield has changed, but the goal remains the same: protecting the future of his country and its people by ensuring a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable tomorrow.
