The Nagrota Gaushala, managed by the Jammu Municipal Corporation, recently hosted a landmark Mahashivratri celebration that combined deep spiritual faith with a strong commitment to the environment. This “Zero-Plastic, Zero-Landfill” gathering successfully updated traditional Vedic rituals into a sustainable model for public events. The festivities centered on a grand Gau Poojan and hawan, honoring the sacred bond between Mahadev and Nandi. The event was attended by Ms. Mandeep Kaur (IAS), Commissioner Secretary to the Government, Housing and Urban Development Department, along with JMC Joint Commissioners and other officials. Former Minister Mrs. Priya Sethi and a large number of local Sarpanches and Panches also joined the gathering to support this initiative.
During her visit, Commissioner Secretary Mandeep Kaur inspected the Gaushala facilities and emphasized the importance of community involvement in animal welfare. She encouraged the public to contribute to the newly created “Gau Shalaya Punya KarayaAccount,” a dedicated fund designed specifically for the care and development of the cattle. This appeal received an immediate and enthusiastic response, with many local citizens and representatives making donations on the spot to show their support for the cause.
The celebration also served as an important platform to discuss the life-threatening impact of plastic waste on stray and sheltered cattle. Under the theme of “Gau Seva, Maha Seva,” organizers reminded the public that protecting the environment is a vital part of spiritual devotion. To ensure the event remained truly waste-free, all single-use plastics were banned, and the community kitchen served hundreds of people using only biodegradable plates and sustainable alternatives. Additionally, the Peace Initiative Trust distributed free cloth bags to help people move away from plastic in their daily lives.
The success of the Nagrota Gaushala event proves that large religious gatherings can be managed without damaging the local ecosystem. By bringing together government leadership and community participation, the JMC has established a high standard for “Green Pilgrimages” in the region. This event marks a new era where cultural celebrations in Jammu and Kashmir are defined by both tradition and environmental responsibility.
