Shopkeepers of Shopian Lead the Way Toward an ODF+ Future

As the Swachh Survekshan 2025-26 assessment approaches, the Municipal Council Shopian is proving that sustainable change begins with personal engagement. In a focused effort to strengthen field-level preparedness, the Council recently transformed the busy commercial heart of Shopian town into a classroom for public health and civic dignity.

Moving beyond general announcements, the Municipal Council Shopian team walked through the town’s main markets, engaging in direct, one-to-one interactions with the shopkeeper community. Recognizing that commercial areas are high-footfall zones, the drive focused on the critical themes of No Open Defecation (NOD) and No Open Urination (NOU). Shopkeepers were sensitized to the environmental and health impacts of these practices, with a strong emphasis on adopting hygienic sanitation habits that protect both traders and customers.

The campaign went beyond simple instruction; it was an invitation for local business owners to take ownership of their surroundings. Shopkeepers were encouraged to:

• Maintain impeccable cleanliness within and around their establishments.

• Actively support the objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 by discouraging open urination in public corridors.

• Promote a dignified environment that reflects the beauty and heritage of Shopian town.

The response from the trading community has been overwhelmingly positive. By prioritizing visible cleanliness and sustained behavioral change, Municipal Council Shopian is closing service gaps and ensuring that the town is not just ready for a field assessment, but is truly becoming a cleaner, healthier place to live and work.

This initiative stands as a testament to the power of community awareness in sustaining Open Defecation Free (ODF) behaviors and building a cleaner Jammu & Kashmir.
