The push for environmental stewardship across Jammu & Kashmir is gaining tremendous momentum, with multiple institutions securing Green Campus Status under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0 ). From remote colleges to vital healthcare facilities, the commitment to sustainability is now visibly transforming public spaces and setting new benchmarks for environmental excellence.

Uri and Sopore: Inspiring Future Environmentalists

The IEC team recently concluded impactful visits in the Baramulla district, assessing commitment to eco-friendly practices at two key sites: Government Degree College Uri Baramulla and the Sub District Hospital Uri Baramulla. A similar assessment was also conducted at the SRM Welkin Hr. Sec. Educational Institute Sopore.

These visits were comprehensive, covering essential parameters such as waste segregation, the implementation of composting, and strict adherence to plastic-free practices. The teams also assessed cleanliness, energy-saving measures, greenery and the integration of environmental education.

The IEC team was highly impressed by the proactive efforts of the students and management at all locations. Their commitment to integrating sustainability into daily life was evident. The team appreciated the measures already in place and assured the institutions of continued support through awareness programs and technical guidance to solidify their commitment to a greener campus.

PHC Khrew: A Healthcare Model for Sustainability

In a significant achievement for the health sector, Primary Health Centre (PHC) Khrew in Pulwama has been officially declared a Green Campus. This recognition highlights the Centre’s successful transformation into a sustainable, hygienic and eco-friendly healthcare model.

PHC Khrew successfully met all required parameters, demonstrating actionable commitment across the board:

  • Waste Management: Proper segregation of dry and wet waste using separate, designated bins throughout the premises.
  • Plastic-Free Zone: Complete elimination of single-use plastic a critical step for public health and the environment.
  • Hygiene & Sanitation: Maintaining clean and functional toilet facilities for both males and females, alongside strict adherence to regular cleaning schedules and sanitation standards.
  • Well-being Infrastructure: Providing clean and accessible drinking water and promoting energy efficiency through the use of energy-saving lights and devices.
  • Green Spaces: Ensuring adequate plantation and greenery, with regular maintenance fostering a healing environment.
  • Awareness: Utilizing informative display boards to promote cleanliness, hand hygiene and eco-friendly practices among visitors and staff.

Anantnag Recognizes Green Champions

Further south, the commitment to vibrant outdoor spaces was celebrated as the Floriculture Office Dooru-Veerinag in Anantnag was awarded the Green Campus Certification. This accolade specifically acknowledges the office’s outstanding efforts in maintaining pristine green spaces and promoting overall environmental excellence within its campus, proving that beauty and sustainability go hand-in-hand.

The Road Ahead: Sustained Support

The combined successes in Baramulla, Pulwama and Anantnag underscore a growing movement toward environmental responsibility across Jammu & Kashmir. The IEC team, through the continued framework of SBM-U, remains dedicated to providing the necessary technical guidance and awareness support to ensure these institutions not only maintain their Green Campus Status but continue to inspire a sustainable future for the entire region.
