Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, [10-Dec-2025]Mr. Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Bhat, Chief Education Officer (CEO) Srinagar, today presided over a crucial meeting to initiate the comprehensive implementation of the Green Campus Initiative (GCI) across the entire Srinagar district. This vital program operates under the framework of the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0.

The meeting was held in direct pursuance of directives issued by the Director School Education, which mandates that all educational institutions in the district must be brought under the ambit of the initiative. The GCI aims to transform school environments by promoting environmental sustainability, adopting eco-friendly practices and raising critical awareness among students and staff.

During the deliberations, Mr. Bhat emphasized the need for a unified approach to instill a culture of environmental responsibility from the ground up. “The Green Campus Initiative is more than just a cleanliness drive; it’s a commitment to shaping environmentally conscious citizens,” said CEO Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Bhat. “By empowering our institutional leadership, we ensure that sustainability becomes a fundamental pillar of education in Srinagar.”

Comprehensive Training Planned for Eight Zones

To successfully roll out the initiative across all schools, it was collectively decided to immediately organize a structured Capacity Building Session for all eight educational zones within the Srinagar district.

This essential training program will gather key leadership, including Zonal Education Officers (ZEOs), Principals, and Headmasters. The agenda is focused on providing practical, actionable knowledge, covering the full spectrum of the GCI: from fostering a collective understanding of its objectives (Sensitization) and outlining practical steps for its adoption (Implementation Strategies), to showcasing successful models (Best Practices) and establishing clear protocols for tracking and reporting progress (Monitoring Mechanisms).

The initiative marks a significant step toward making Srinagar’s educational sector a leader in environmental stewardship, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the district’s resources.

About the Green Campus Initiative (GCI): The GCI is a focused program operating under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 designed to promote environmental sustainability, resource efficiency, and environmental education within educational institutions by concentrating on areas such as waste management, energy conservation, plantation and plastic reduction.
